Zhongruan/ Liuqin Instructor Clara Tan Su-Min
Clara Tan Su-Min started learning Ruan from Ms Xu Yi Ping and Guzheng from Mr Tan Chin Huat at the age of 8. She is versatile in the following plucked string instruments ~ Ruan, Liuqin and Guzheng.
In 2000, she was accepted into NAFA School of Young Talents ~ Gifted Young Chinese Instrumentalists Course for Guzheng under the professional guidance of Mdm Yin Qun.
She is currently being personally groomed on the performing skill in traditional and contemporary techniques in the Ruan by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Ruan Principal, Mdm Zhang Rong Hui, since the age of 1 1 years.
She has had masterclasses with Liu Xing, Shen Fei and Professor Zhou Yu Guo (Xi’an Conservatory of Music).
She holds a Diploma with Distinction in Zhongruan and Grade 9 with Distinction in Guzheng from the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing.
Su-Min has competed in the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council and achieved the following awards:-
- 2nd Prize for Solo Zhongruan Junior Category ~ Year 2000
- 1st Prize for Junior Ruan Ensemble Category ~ Year 2000
- 1st Prize for Solo Zhongruan Senior Category ~ Year 2004
- 1st Prize for Open Ensemble Category ~ Year 2008
Apart from being the Principal for Ruan with Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra, she is also the Soprano-Ruan Principal with The Singapore Ruan Chamber Ensemble. She was also part of the inaugural NAC Competition Ensemble for the National Chinese Music Competition 2006, organized by the National Arts Council.
Besides being actively involved as soloist in many concerts, Su-Min and her sister Su-Hui has been invited to premier the ZhongRuan Duet concerto piece accompanied by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, “姐妹岛” composed by our local young composer Wang Chen Wei and they have also premiered a Zhongruan and Guzheng duet, “ 月琴赞” specially re-arranged by Professor Zhou Yu Guo in the concert, entitled “Chinese Melodies in Symphony”, held at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore.
Su-Min is currently in her Final Year pursuing a Diploma in Music (Performance) majoring in Zhongruan, at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
In 2008, she took part in the NAFA - Music Essentials Concerto Competition and won 1st Prize.
