Erhu Instructor Lena Heng
Lena started learning the piano at the age of 8 and has obtained her Grade 8 in her piano performance.
In 1997, she started learning the erhu under the guidance of Mr Ng Seng Hong. She graduated with a
degree in Music in 2007 (2nd upper honours) under the tutelage of Mr Wong Sun Tat. Currently she is also
under the guidance of Mr Wong On-yuen.
In 1999 she obtained the 2nd prize in the National Chinese Music Competition Open Category – Folk
Music / Wind & / or Percussion Ensemble; and 2001, she clinched the 1st prize in the National Chinese
Music Competition Senior Ensemble Category.
Lena was granted the Hokkien Huay Kuan Scholarship in 2004. In 2005, Lena was awarded the NAC -
Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship and in 2006, she received the NAC Arts Bursary for her degree course.
Lena performs regularly with several orchestras. She is a keen musician not only in Chinese orchestral
music, but also in traditional Chinese folk music. In 2007,the Ministry of the information and the Arts
sponsored her to pursue studies in Nanyin at Xiamen , China under Wu Shi An and Wang Xiu Yi. She is
also learning Teochew Music and the Teochew erxian from renowned master Li Xian Lie.
Besides traditional Chinese pieces, Lena is enthusiastic in attempting new compositions, new
instrumental combinations as well as being involved in multicultural musical exchanges. She is
frequently involved in the People's Association Cultural Troupe concerts where various media and
cultural mixtures takes place and has also performed several new compositions for the erhu with
different musicians. Lena also enjoys experimenting with different genres of music, and has performed
with jazz and rock bands as well.
Lena has frequently performed abroad, in countries such as China, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. In
2002, she was invited to perform in the Esplanade’s Trial and Orientation Concert before its opening.
She was also a performer at the Millennium Concert organized by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in
2000. In 2005, she also performed with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in the “Rejuvenation Series –
Nanyin Night”. At the same time she is also a frequent performer in the Singapore Arts Fest and Arts
Fringe activities.
In August 2006, Lena staged a sold-out solo recital. In the same year, she also got involved in the
project “Rojak” which brings together a conglomeration of various creative fields and in December
2008, she held her second solo recital.
