Guzheng Instructor Sophy Tan Su-Hui

Sophy Tan Su-Hui started learning Guzheng from Mr Tan Chin Huat and Ruan from Ms Xu Yi Ping at the age of 8. She is versatile in the following plucked string instruments ~ Guzheng, Ruan and Liuqin.

In 2000, she was accepted into NAFA School of Young Talents ~ Gifted Young Chinese Instrumentalists Course for Guzheng and has been under the professional guidance of Mdm Yin Qun, since. In addition, she is currently also under the tutelage of Mdm Zhang Rong Hui, Singapore Chinese Orchestra Ruan Principal, on the Ruan.

She has had masterclasses with Liu Xing, Shen Fei and Professor Zhou Yu Guo (Xi’an Conservatory of Music).

She holds a Diploma with Distinction in Guzheng and Diploma with Distinction in Zhongruan from the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing.

Su-Hui has competed in the National Chinese Music Competition organized by the National Arts Council and achieved the following awards:-

- 2nd Prize for Solo Guzheng Junior Category ~ Year 2000
- 1st Prize for Junior Ruan Ensemble Category ~ Year 2000
- 2nd Prize for Solo Guzheng Intermediate Category ~ Year 2002
- 1st Prize for Solo Guzheng Senior Category ~ Year 2004

Apart from being the Ruan member with Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra, she is also the Soprano-Ruan member with The Singapore Ruan Chamber Ensemble. She was twice invited by the National Arts Council to be part of the NAC Competition Ensemble for the National Chinese Music Competition 2006 and 2008.

Besides being actively involved as soloist in many concerts, Su-Hui and her sister Su-Min has been invited to premier the ZhongRuan Duet concerto piece accompanied by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, “姐妹岛” composed by our local young composer Wang Chen Wei and they have also premiered a Zhongruan and Guzheng duet, “ 月琴赞” specially re-arranged by Professor Zhou Yu Guo in the concert, entitled “Chinese Melodies in Symphony”, held at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore.

Su-Hui is currently in her Final Year pursuing a Diploma in Music (Performance) majoring in Guzheng, at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

In 2008, she took part in the NAFA - Music Essentials Concerto Competition and won 2nd Prize.
