Dizi Instructor Tan Qing Lun
Tan Qing Lun started learning dizi at the age of twelve from renowned dizi Maestro Zhan Yong Ming. Soon after, he was admitted to Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) School of Young Talents.
Under careful tutelage from Professor Zhan, Qing Lun was awarded numerous prizes both locally and internationally. Such as:
- In 2003, he won a Gold award as well as Best Performer Award in the Dizi Secondary School category of the East Zone Schools Chinese Music Competition organised by the East Zone Schools Chinese Orchestra Development Centre.
- In 2004, he was awarded 2nd Prize in the Dizi Intermediate category of the National Chinese Music Competition.
- In 2005, he clinched a gold award in the Youth category of the first Ting Yu Cup National Bamboo Flute Competition held in China.
- In 2006, he came in 1st in the Dizi Youth category of National Chinese Music Competition.
- In 2006, he was awarded bronze medal in the International Competition of Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments (Professional category) held in USA.
- In 2008, he was part of the Artssphere Chamber Ensemble that came in 1st in the Open Ensemble category of National Chinese Music Competition.
Qing Lun has been featured many times as a soloist in several Chinese orchestras, such as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. In 2006, Qing Lun represented the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra on an exchange program to Hong Kong, thereby staging a concert at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre as part of the Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. Qing Lun also toured Changchun and Beijing (China) with the City Chinese Orchestra in 2007. Qing Lun has extended his learning to teaching, and has successfully led Anglo-Chinese School Chinese Orchestra to achieved Gold award in the SYF Central Judging in 2007 and 2009.
Qing Lun would be graduating with a Diploma in Music (Performance) at NAFA this year, 2009. He is currently the Dizi Principal of People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra as well as the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. He is also a member of the Singapore Dizi Society and Artssphere Chamber Ensemble.
